draft 5

“Finally the British are gone and there is bliss of hope for the new country Sri Lanka!” exclaimed Insith’s father patiently reading Ceylon time’s newspaper with joy and laughter.
“You must remember this day on 22nd May 1972 sons and daughters, this is the day that the whites have gone back to where they are supposed to be.” added Insith ’s mother happily resting on the crouch making dolls.
Insith, 10, came from a Tamil family and he was the oldest among the sibling. He had a sister called Nuveena and a brother called Geethan. They knew nothing about politics. They owned a Ceylon tea plantation which was passed down from their ancestors to the head of the family who was their father. They had contributed a lot to the new Sri Lanka’s economic growth by producing tea leaves and boosting the economy through trading. Eventually, they thought that everything would go well and smooth but they were wrong.
Insith was 20 years old by then. He had a hard time studying trying to get to university as there was a change of university admission criteria. Before 1970, admission to university was based on merit but after 1970, the admission to university was not based on merit. Tamil students had to score higher than Sinhalese students in order for them to get a place in the university. In addition, the number of places for Tamil students was also limited.
Sometimes bad thing happens to good people, despite working hard for his “o” levels, Insith still did not managed to get into university. He started to feel that the government was lacking of fairness just because they are from different races. He knew that he needed to do something for his race for a better future. He also did not want his family to get disappointed so he bluffed them that he found a job that pays far more then working in a tea plantation.
One ordinary day with unexpected things that happen that changed the life of their family permanently. As usual, Insith brought Nuveena and Geethan to their school and went to work. He brought his lunchbox and sat with his clique of friends during lunch time. One of his friends, Muthu, told him that there would be a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) being form by a bunch of youth Tamils to oppose the government to fight for justice
Insith knew that opportunity was knocking at his doorsteps. Without any hesitation, He immediately went to their headquaters and signed up to join the Liberation Tiqers of Tamil Eelam. Not long after his harsh training in the camp, his family members started to feel something amiss happened to him. There were bruises all over Insith’s body and when his parents asked him what happened he claim that he is fine.
“Father! Mother! I am off to work!” exclaimed Insith while wearing his shoes and ran off hurriedly. Insith‘s dad noticed that his bag was getting bulkier each day. So on that particular day, Insith‘s dad finally took a step of faith and spied on him secretly. Shockingly, he saw his own son walking in to a public toilet and changed to his army suit. He was very disheartened and disappointed when he saw his own filial son in that suit. Then he saw him went off in a truck with a group of fellow comrades. Insith‘s dad went home hurriedly went home and told everyone in the house what he saw. They were utterly shock upon hearing the news.
Soon after that, the rioting between the Sinhalese government and Liberation Tiqers of Tamil Eelam had started. The Sinhalese-dominated army had driven thousands of Tamils were force to abandon and run for their lives. Insith‘s family was one of the victim whose home was abandoned. Although Insith was worried about his family, his determination and perseverance had made him to stay and fight in the battle against what was opposing them.
Finally, Insith had meet up with Nuveena and Geethan by chance when he was patrolling nearby a church. There moments of joys filled the whole place for an instance.
“ Big brother! I am so afraid to tell you that….” Nuveena cried profusely, looking at the doll that her mum had made.
“Our parents had died just to protect us!” added Geethan ran and cried immediately after saying his words.
For that instance, Insith cried like rain gushing down from the skies and he immediately ran and hugged his both siblings and trying to comfort them by explaining “This is life, you both must stay strong do you understand me.”
Soon after that, they brought Insith in front of his parent’s copses. They do not have enough money to buy a coffin. Together unit as one, the sibling pluck out the courage and started digging for two large holes for their parents corpse and tears and screams can be heard far away.
When they were digging half way, gunshots and grenade was heard from distance. Insith immediately took up his AK-47 gun and get ready for any on coming attacks. He forced his young sibling to stay in the church while he was at the door guarding.
Suddenly a extremely loud gunshot was heard Geethan and Nuveena saw Insith fell to the ground unconsciously. They ran to him regardless of what was happening in the surrounding.
“Geethan, protect your sister no matter what happens.” murmured Insith gasping desperately for air.
“God, When can it stop.” said Insith last words with disappointment. Although his had passed away but his spirit toward his family will never fade away.
